Re-made and premiered at our own Duke of York’s Picture House, Brighton Rock is on its second lease of life. But what’s new, what’s original and why does the book keep on selling?
Well the original (1947) version is somewhat different to the star-studded one we got to see this week. The just released film, starring Helen Mirren keeps with the Brighton gangster theme but Places Pinkie into the world of mods and rockers.
Not sure that was really neccesary, perhaps a case of ‘adoptrophenia’ – where the director thought to generate more interest, he’d tag it to Brighton’s mid-sixties’ seaside rivalry between mods and rockers.
It’s good mind, definitly worth a watch, but still it’s without the ending Graham Greene wanted. Directors, eh? Always want to put a cherry on top…
