Really about time we followed up our Top Café blogs, and after we popped out of our bed and breakfast in Brighton and popped in for a brew in Ground, we knew which coffee shop to start with!
Located at the top end of Kemptown (36 St George’s Rd), it’s well worth the walk. While the furnishings are simple, they are welcoming enough and there are plenty of papers and a well-stocked bookshelf to sift through.
But down to the real deal: the coffee. Being fussy types and having recently returned from Italy, we asked for the increasingly popular ‘Flat White’, but made with a Ristretto. Before you know it, we’re deep in the conversation about Ristretto and clearly Ground’s baristas know their stuff.
There are several opinions on how this sweet coffee shot differs from the others (see below) but once it was served up, it really put other coffee options to sleep.
Accompanied with a slice of chocolate and orange cake, which kicked with cocoa and zest but didn’t hammer the wallet, it was the best coffee we’ve had in Brighton this year.
Friendly, knowledgeable staff; great coffee and cakes; a funky Italian bike in the corner, but not over styled; it’s a great place.
If you are looking to Kemptown or are visiting Brighton just wanting to wander a little further, pop in and try a coffee with a Ristretto. Well grounded, but still cool.
