‘Kovak’ interviewed before Brighton free music session
Brighton electropop tunesters Kovak are getting noticed way beyond the Brighton manor.
So, with a free gig on Saturday, and before it all gets out of hand and the majors start chucking chunks of cash around, we thought it was time we caught up with them.
Here’s Darren, Kovak’s drummer:
Q: You’ve been busy, and tongues are definitely wagging. So, what’s the masterplan?
The plan?? To be come rich and famous and tour the world playing music! Or something like that. Maybe the odd Rolls in a swimming pool too..
Q: The band: who’s from where?
Me (Dazza Drums) and my Brother Karl (Guitar) are from Maidstone, although Karl was actually born in Cornwall, but we’ve been in Brighton a few years now! Martin (Keys/Bass) is from Kidderminster (up north right?), and Annelies (the voice) is actually from Belgium.
Q: Brighton’s packed with bands. Does that make it easier for musicians or more difficult?
Well… hhmmm, tough one that… to be honest i suppose the more bands there are the trickier it is to get noticed, but we don’t mind a bit of competition!!!
I suppose if there were only 100 bands in the world, yes would be a lot easier to get noticed!!
Q: We’re still hooked back into 80s culture, which bands really defined the period for you?
For me personally i wasn’t really a fan of the 80’s!!! But i suppose looking back now i would say Duran Duran, Pixies, Joy Division/New Order, AH SOO MANY!! …Can I say The Police??? Kinda late 70’s i suppose!!! And i love a bit of Indie and Grunge, but that was more late 80’s early 90’s.
Q:The guy who plays the wheelybin/watercooler drum kit around Brighton: drummer or nutter?
Ah yes i know the one… eeerrr NUTTA! But he is quite good
Q: When you leave town for a while, which part of Brighton do you take with you?
THE BEACH!!!!!
Catch Kovak live this weekend in Brighton during White Night@ The Blind Tiger Club (formerly Hector’s House) 7pm till 4am, with Kovak on at midnight.

Usually the only music you here in a Brighton BnB drifts out from a knackered radio in reception. And you can guarantee it’s tuned to Bland 103 FM.

Aidy, on tour
Well, as the only BnB in Brighton with a real blog – rather than a ‘what’s on’ list – The Ambassador is bringing some outstanding live music to the party.
Aidy is playing a one-off gig on Saturday 9th July at 8 p.m. – this is the man who wrote a song every week for a year! The singer/ songwriter’s first album drew an insightful review from Steve Lamacq, who described it as having a “cinematic quality that pervades the haunting weirdness”.
It’s going to be intimate, and a rare chance to catch him with his three piece – picked up a recording contract this year, so watch out.
Tickets are £free, yes free – that’s just the way he rolls -so spread the word: the best Brighton BnB is also putting on live music. Come on down!
Saturday 9th at 8 p.m.
